Speed is the gate to everything

In Steal an Egg, speed is the number that decides which biomes you can rob, and biomes decide which pets you can own. Money matters only because it buys speed upgrades. If your income has stopped growing, the fix is almost always more speed, not more waiting.

The biome signs give you the targets: 900 → 10K → 40K → 170K → 700K → 2.5M → 18M → 700M → 2.5B → 7B → 20B → 50B. Notice the two brutal jumps, Prehistoric (7x over the Abyss) and Cosmic (nearly 40x over Prehistoric). Most of this guide is about getting through those two.

Every source of speed, ranked by stage

Early game (0 – 170K):

  1. Index rewards. The biggest source by far. Each new pet pays speed. One run went from 24K to 63K speed in a single claim.
  2. Community group bonus. Joining the game's group gives a one-off 10,000.
  3. Trails. The $100 and $5K trails are cheap multipliers.
  4. Treadmill. Slow at first (10–24 per step) but it compounds.

Mid game (170K – 700M):

  1. Treadmill upgrades. Gold (240 per step), then Lucky Block (1,000 per step at $75B).
  2. Trails. Orange ($30M), Golden 3.5x ($39M), Galaxy Cosmic 5x ($20B).
  3. Index rewards. Still good. A first eternal paid 5.4M speed.
  4. Speed potions for single big attempts.

Late game (700M+):

  1. Treadmill tier (Demonic, Angelic, Astral, Guardian at 34M per step).
  2. Speed multiplier ladder (Robux) multiplies all of the above.
  3. Admin Abuse treadmills at 4x–8x. One creator added 15B speed in a few minutes.

The upgrade order that works

A pattern shows up in every efficient run:

  1. Trail first when it's cheap relative to your income. It multiplies everything after.
  2. Treadmill next. Each treadmill tier roughly pays for itself in one session.
  3. Pen upgrades last. More slots don't raise income unless you have pets to fill them. Several players bought pen upgrades by accident while saving for a treadmill.

Before every purchase, ask: "Does this help me reach the next sign faster than stealing a better egg would?" If a better egg is available, steal it first, because higher income makes every later upgrade cheaper.

Night is your training window

You can't steal at night, but eggs grow faster. So:

  • At dusk, place every egg you're holding.
  • Run on the treadmill for the whole night.
  • At dawn, claim the index for whatever hatched, buy upgrades and go steal.

This rhythm alone roughly doubles how much useful time you get from a session.

Beating the Prehistoric wall (18M)

The T-Rex is the first guardian that punishes "just barely enough". Players with 18.1M speed bounced off it over and over. What worked:

  • Overshoot. One player went from 18M to 50M on the treadmill and was still getting caught on big eggs. At around 70M they finally carried one home cleanly.
  • Small eggs first. Small Prehistoric eggs are reachable right at 18M. Big ones are not.
  • Buy the 3x purple trail ($3.5M) or better before you try. It made a visible difference.
  • Use the T-Rex's distraction. When the T-Rex is chasing another player, the rest of the nest is open.

Beating the Cosmic wall (700M)

From 18M to 700M is the longest grind in Steal an Egg. Approaches that worked:

  • Get a Prehistoric eternal first. A Mosasaurus or rift eternal multiplies your income, so treadmill upgrades come faster.
  • Lucky Block treadmill + Galaxy trail is the combo that unlocked Cosmic in the free-to-play run.
  • Drop-and-pick-up a small egg. At 637M, below the sign, one player escaped the Cosmic guardian with a small egg. Another did it at 700M with "the smallest cosmic egg I've ever seen".
  • Wait for Admin Abuse and farm the admin treadmill.

Robux speed: what's worth it

There are two very different Robux speed products:

  • Speed multipliers (x2 for 3 Robux, x4 for 9, up to x4,000 at tier 12) multiply your treadmill gain forever. The full ladder adds up to roughly 3,000–4,000 Robux on a full-price account (the x4,000 tier alone is about 1,238), and less on discounted regions. If you're going to spend Robux on speed, this is the one.
  • "1 billion speed" packs (2,300–3,000 Robux each) add a flat amount once. One creator bought 15 of them, about 42,000 Robux, then noticed their treadmill was giving them a billion speed for free in a few minutes. Avoid.

Speed isn't everything: egg weight

The sign assumes a light egg. Heavy eggs slow you down. That's why a creator with 7.8B speed was caught "instantly" at the 7B Titan Temple: they'd grabbed the biggest egg. Before going for a big egg, aim for 20–50% above the sign or use the tricks in the stealing tricks guide.

Plan it with numbers

Plug your current speed, per-step value and multipliers into the speed planner. It shows how long you need on the treadmill for every biome, which makes it easy to see whether to keep running or go steal first.
