What mounts are

The October 10 update (the game calls it Update 8) finally lets you ride your pets. Any pet you own can become a mount: you sit on it, it carries you around the map, and it follows you into the biomes while you steal. It's the feature the community had been asking for since the game launched, and it arrived together with a racing event, a new mutation and a new NPC called the Star Handler.

Turning a pet into a mount costs one shooting star. Here's everything we learned getting our own mounts, from waiting night after night for a free star to feeding stars to divines.

Step 1: get a shooting star

There are two ways, and they're very different in cost and patience.

Free: the star drop event

Every night there's a rare chance of a star drop. When it happens, the sky turns dark and a little star falls for every eligible player in the server. Find yours, hold on tight to catch it, and it's yours for free.

Two rules matter:

  • You must have been in the server since the start of that in-game day. Joining mid-night doesn't count.
  • Server hopping doesn't help. A star drop in one server doesn't mean you'll get one in the next, so you can't farm it by hopping.

How rare is rare? We sat through twelve nights in a row waiting for one and never saw a drop. Ten nights is roughly 50 minutes of real time, so don't plan your week around free stars. If you play a lot anyway, keep the game open at night and keep an eye on the sky; you'll get one eventually.

Robux: the Star Handler

The Star Handler stands near spawn and introduces himself as the one who looks after the stars that fall from the sky. Talk to him and choose View Stars to buy them:

  • One star costs roughly 240 to 400 Robux, depending on your region. We paid 320 on one account and saw 360 and 400 on others.
  • A five-pack was 1,120 Robux for us, cheaper per star.
  • You can only buy five a week. The limit resets every Saturday, alongside the weekly update.

The weekly cap is a nice touch. You can't simply buy a mount for every pet you own, and free players aren't that far behind.

Step 2: feed the star to a pet

This part confused almost everyone on launch day, us included. The pet has to be placed in your pen, not just in your inventory. Unequip your other pets first so you can reach it easily, walk up to it holding the star, and use the feed prompt. You'll get a warning that the star is irreversible and can only be used once. Confirm, the pet glows and grows for a second, and the game announces that it "is now a mount".

A few things we learned the hard way:

  • One star per pet, forever. You can't move a mount to another pet. Choose your favourite, not just your current best.
  • Any pet works. We mounted a Gorilla King, an Aetherion, a Night Flame, a Spirit World Guardian, a Cthulhu, a Dreadscale and a Sabertooth. Divines, eternals, secrets and even small pets all accept stars.
  • Favourite it. Mark the mount as a favourite so you don't sell it by accident when you clear out your inventory.
  • If the prompt doesn't show up, rejoin the server. On launch day a server restart fixed it for several of us.

Step 3: ride it

Once a pet is a mount, a mount button appears on your screen, so you can hop on from anywhere. You can jump, run through every biome and even pick up eggs while riding. The pet shrinks when you sit on it, so a map-sized whale becomes a reasonably sized ride. When you get off, it goes straight back to your pen.

Some limits:

  • You can't ride during Red Light Green Light; the game tells you to leave the event first.
  • You can't use the treadmill while mounted.
  • Players can still hit you off your mount with a bat. When that happens, the mount returns to your pen.

Do mounts make you faster?

No, not in any way we could measure. We timed the same run on foot and on a mount and it felt identical; several other tests came to the same conclusion. Your speed comes from the treadmill, trails and multipliers, not from what you're sitting on. Big or small, divine or common, every mount moves at your normal speed.

The real advantage: traps

There is one practical benefit, and it's a big one: traps don't catch you while you're mounted. We stole an egg on foot, ran into a trap and froze. Then we did the same run on our mount, carrying an egg, and rolled straight over the trap. Anyone who has lost a giant egg to a trap at the end of the Enchanted Forest knows how much that's worth.

So if you steal in busy servers where traps line the route home, steal on your mount. If you're the one setting traps, remember that mounted thieves will drive straight through them; use your bat instead.

Which pet should you mount?

Since mounts don't add speed, the choice is about looks and attachment:

  • Your favourite divine. The Kitsune's tails swing as it runs, the Aetherion lets you hold its horns, and the Night Flame looks enormous even shrunk down.
  • A pet you'll never sell. A mount you later replace is a wasted star.
  • Not your race pets. Racers are a separate system for the racing event. See the racing guide.

Is the mount update pay-to-win?

Not really. Mounts are mostly cosmetic, the trap immunity is available to anyone who catches a free star, and the five-per-week cap stops anyone from buying a whole stable. If you're saving Robux, the Robux spending guide still puts 2x Money and the speed multipliers first.

Mount FAQ

Can I turn a mount back into a normal pet? No. The star is consumed and the change is permanent. The pet still earns money in your pen as normal.

Does a mount still earn money? Yes. It sits in your pen and earns exactly what it did before.

Can I sell a mount? You can, so favourite it to avoid accidents.

What's next? The game's Halloween Part One update was teased for the following week, and the developers have said the next few updates will be their biggest. We'll update this page when mounts change. For everything else that arrived on October 10, read our mount update recap.
