Under the sea

The Abyss Ocean is biome seven, behind a 2.5 million speed sign. It's a blue, watery stretch full of sharks, whales and one very famous tentacled secret. For most players it's where the Hatched a Secret badge pops, usually from a Kraken, and where the eternal El Maja pushes income toward half a billion.

How the guardian behaves

The ocean's guardian isn't as famous as Cerberus or the T-Rex, but it's quick. Players with exactly 2.5M speed got away with the smallest eggs; one creator with 2.7M took a big secret Kraken egg and only "just barely" made it: "I'm just barely fast enough. Yes!" With 5.2M speed, another player called it easy: "He got loads of eggs in here for me."

The usual tricks work here: take small eggs, drop and pick up when it closes in, and steal when the guardian is busy with someone else.

The Abyss Ocean egg pool

  • Parrot Fish: common, $175. Yes, it looks like Nemo.
  • Swordfish: uncommon, about $1K.
  • Shark: legendary, about $11K. "Not so legendary."
  • Orca: mythic, about $60K.
  • Whale Shark: cosmic, about $671K.
  • Pufferfish shows up too.
  • Kraken: the secret, $14–17M base and up to $55M in an admin-abuse spawn.
  • El Maja: the eternal, $130M base.

The Kraken

The Kraken is a red-orange octopus, "a cute little fella", and the most common first secret in Steal an Egg. When it spawns, the server message reads "a secret Kraken egg spawned in the Abyss Ocean". It also shows up in rifts. Typical values: $14M average, $17M for a secret spawn and $55M for a big admin-abuse copy.

Later in the game, Krakens are often not worth placing. One server-hop session noted "I don't even know if Krakens can make my base anymore". But early on, one Kraken outearns everything else in your pen combined.

El Maja

The ocean's eternal is a big, toothy creature that one creator called "Huggy Wuggy". It has a 5-hour timer and responds well to mutations:

Mutation Income
None $130M
Golden $325M
Scrambled $357M
Rainbow $455M

That table is another clean data point for our measured multipliers (2.5x, 2.75x, 3.5x). The Silver version "really brings out the eyes in a creepy way". It's the ocean's best pet and a strong mid-game anchor.

Farming tips

  • Hop for Krakens. Each server rolls its own eggs, and Kraken eggs spawn often.
  • Plant El Maja before night. A 5-hour timer shrinks noticeably when most of it runs at night.
  • Fill the index. Ocean pets give solid index rewards for the push to the Prehistoric wall.

The wall ahead

The next biome, Prehistoric, needs 18 million speed, a 7x jump and the first real wall in Steal an Egg. Use your Kraken and El Maja income to buy treadmill upgrades and a better trail, and expect a long stretch of night-time training. One free-to-play creator left the game on the treadmill for an hour while getting a haircut, and came back to 754 million speed.

Common Abyss Ocean mistakes

  • Fighting over small Krakens late. Once you have eternals, a $14M Kraken barely moves your total.
  • Forgetting the night cycle. El Maja's 5-hour timer is much shorter if most of it runs at night.
